How Music Therapy Reduces Stress and Promotes Emotional Balance

The pace of today's world has made it impossible to refrain from including stress in our lives. Everybody requires a healthy outlet to restore their inner calm amidst professional pressures, personal challenges, or emotional turmoil. And one such powerful and evidence-based method is music therapy for stress relief. Music has this capacity to link us with our feelings and enables us to release tension, find our balance again, and get back to peace.

I am Santosh Ghatpande, a Music Therapist from Pune, and my journey with music began when I was six years old. My parents introduced me to that magical world of melodies, and since then, music has shaped every aspect of my life: be it excelling in academics, CS, LLB, or having a rewarding 17-plus-year-long career in IT. Yet, the deeper magic of music truly revealed itself as I explored its therapeutic potential.

Unveiling the Healing Power of Music

While the relationship with music was initially at the level of performance and passion, it slowly dawned on my inquisitive mind: can music serve something more than entertainment? Curiosity further led me to study the branch of Music Therapy, first encountered in non-Indian cultures. Thus, I set out with a determination for formal education and certification in Music Therapy, adapting it to the rich traditions of Indian Classical Music by learning to merge music with principles of psychology and medicine.

By the time of my certification, I had done over 100 case studies and had first-hand experiences of how some musical techniques can reduce anxiety, depression, and restore emotional balance.

These experiences also further pushed me to enhance my skills with NLP Practitioner and Life Coach Certifications, enabling me to merge science, sound, and psychology into my therapeutic approach. Today, my therapy sessions are available both in-person and online, making it easier for individuals from across India and abroad to experience the healing benefits of music therapy from the comfort of their own space.

What is Music Therapy?

Music therapy is the structured use of rhythm, melody, and harmony to provide treatment aimed at prescribed nonmusical goals of emotional and psychological importance. This is not casual listening but rather carefully designed sessions guided by a certified Music Therapist in which every note, instrument, or song selection has a specific purpose, which might be intended to soothe the mind, decrease stress hormones, and induce relaxation.

For instance, Indian classical music has a slow tempo raga that works to slow down the heart rate and lower the blood pressure, allowing the clients access to very deep states of relaxation while upbeat rhythms will elevate a person's mood, making him or her motivated and alleviate symptoms of depression.

How Music Therapy Reduces Stress

Regulates breathing and heart rate:

Music affects the physiological reaction of the human body. Listening to pleasant ragas and instrumental sounds slows the rate of breathing, heartbeats fall, thereby signalling the brain to relax.

Reduces Cortisol Levels:

Several studies have proved that music therapy reduces cortisol, a stress hormone, and brings about clear mental acuity and balance.

Enhances Emotional Expression:

Most people do not find words appropriate for their feelings. It is a non-verbal method that lets one release suppressed feelings, thus leading to emotional balance.

Improves focus and sleep.

It can thus be used as a means of releasing tension, enhancing concentration, and improving sleep quality for those experiencing anxiety or insomnia among professionals.

It restores the harmony of the body and mind.

It also means the resonance of music with our bodily rhythms, the fitting of emotions and physical states into inner harmony.

Music Therapy and Depression

During my work as a Music Therapist in Pune, I found that music therapy can certainly work as an ancillary method of treatment for depression. Certain ragas and improvisations stimulate positive activities of the brain, which increase the production of serotonin and dopamine, neurotransmitters responsible for making one feel good. Most of the clients undergoing music therapy for depression have reported improvement in mood, reduction of anxiety, with a greater sense of purpose after regular sessions.

Music Therapy in Corporate and Personal Life

I have provided more than 3,500 personal and corporate sessions with music as a transformative tool since 2012. The silent productivity killer in a corporate setting is usually stress. I was able to help professionals enhance their emotional resilience, communicate better, and improve focus through customized programs using music therapy as a method to deal with stress, along with executive coaching.

Individually, music therapy has been most personal to so many in finding joy again, in working through deep feelings, and in the healing of burnout or trauma. Corporate and individual clients can also opt for online music therapy programs, making stress relief and emotional balance accessible without geographical limits.

Learning and Practicing Music Therapy

With growing awareness of the healing power of sound, many have been inspired to explore Music Therapy Training and Courses. I endeavour to help aspiring therapists, musicians, and counsellors understand how music interfaces with the human psyche. Participants at my workshops and training learn to apply Indian Classical music as a base for therapeutic practice.
